About This Walk
Old Town, New Town takes in the sights of the medieval Old Town and the splendour of the Georgian New Town.
Highlights Include
- A Journey from under the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle to the site of the medieval city’s walls.
- Greyfriars Kirkyard, gifted to the city by Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th century. (In)Famous for its history; connections to medical science; Bobby the Greyfriars dog with Hollywood connections; and literature, both old and new.
- The Lawnmarket and High Street (Royal Mile), including the Closes and 15th & 16th century buildings.
- The places of punishment, where many of Edinburgh’s criminals came to a grizzly end.
- The Canongate (Royal Mile) with its Royal connections, buildings of interest and Canongate Kirkyard
- The preserved architectural masterpiece that is the Georgian New Town, covering an area larger than those of York, Chester, Bath and Chichester added together – with helpful information on the planning, architecture and lived experiences of those that moved there in the 18th century.
